    MODERNITY PAYS TRIBUTE TO HISTORY

    Two new buildings with rental apartments closed gaps in the streetscapes of Hauptstrasse and Belziger Strasse. The two buildings stand in equitable companionship with the ensemble of listed buildings; the linking element is the namesake “brick” common to the façades of both the former post and telecommunications buildings and the new structures. Both of the new buildings are reinforced concrete constructions with punctuated facades and ample glazing. Subtle organic contours lend the massive construction buoyancy.

    The entry to the underground garage is in Belziger Strasse, the exit in Hauptstrasse reducing traffic to a minimum. Both residential buildings offer convenient elevator access to the garage. Whilst the three courtyards are accessible for both tenants and visitors, the playground with ping pong table and sloped dip is reserved for residents only.


    HAUPTSTRASSE

    The staggered façade is accentuated by gold-framed window boxes. With each storey the façade recedes whilst the window boxes appear to move forward although they are arranged in a vertical line. A residents’ entry is an eye-catcher with its organic forms, cobblestones and views to the courtyard, the sloped dip and playground. The vegetated room includes a smaller rooftop terrace with lawn for tenants. This building accommodates 107 rental apartments of different sizes, a denn’s organic supermarket, a shop, and one larger office unit.

By means of an intricate reconstruction method the gatekeeper’s house was completely reconstructed and will soon accommodate a small coffee shop. To its right is the tenants’ entrance to the garage. All 20 rental apartments in this building have balconies and those facing Belziger Strasse boast with striking waved balustrades.
